Misty I Remember
by suzanne schultz.........................................
I remember Misty like yesterday. I was in the second grade and my Mom got me and my sister a puppy. She was a small mix breed. It was cold so Mom left her in the side room of our home with a space heater. We came home from school everyday and played with her. We had her about two weeks when she got hurt. My sister was older than me so she always had a key to get in the house. The day Misty got hurt remains with me still. We got of the bus and ran to the house, when my sister opened the door and there lay Misty flat as a board. My sister knew what was wrong with her. She had chewed the cord to the space heater in half. She still had a part of the cord in her mouth. MY sister unpluged the cord but there was no sign of life in Misty. We called our Mom at work crying. She rushed home wrapped Misty in a towel and took off for the vet. We were sure it was to late. But just as the vet touched her she opened her eyes. The vet gave us little hope she would live. But live she did. She beat all the odds. She had to stay at vets more than at home the first year. When she did come home she would whine all the time for Mom. She was no beauty to look at. She had lost half her face. Her toung hung out the side of her face and she had no jaw bone on her right side. But she was tough she never met a food she didnt like. She ate like a pig. As the years passed I do not think she ever saw herself as different. Some people called her ugly, some said she should have been put to sleep. Then there were others who called her blest. Mistys greatest joy was to lay in the sun. Misty lived to be 13 and after that first year she never complained or seemed unhappy. She taught me you can overcome whatever life hands you. Misty went to Rainbow Bridge years ago. But I know some day I will see my half face angel again. I can just hear the other animals at the bridge. "That face, that face. Where did you get that face?" That face will forever be in my heart. Have fun Misty I will see you soon.
