our baby was born christmas day 2000, she seemed a little different from the 5 other puppies, and was named sad eyes cause she looked "far away" at 5 weeks old she became very sick, and jaundiced, the vet said she had a liver shunt and had only about a month or so to live, we started her on lactulose, (causes severe diahrrea at times) and carried her around everywhere. her feet rarely touched the ground, with liver failure, you become very confused as the ammonia in the body goes up. she got as high as 313. norms are about 15, but she played and was happy, when she would get really sick, her body would stop growing, but her tongue continued to grow, leading to a charactoristic that was unique to her. finally, one week before her first birthday, she went outside, she seemed more confused then ever, and very week, and just fell over, her medicine and liver could no longer keep her going. the vet said that our love, devotion and medical care, (i am a nurse) kept sad eyes alive so long. she never acted to be in pain, she was beautiful, fluffy, brown and white.
