When the word came that Katrina was on her way 1000's of people ran for safety. The car was loaded and gased up. The roads became a nightmare. And in their hast to get to safty many people forgot about their pets. Some were left behind with food for a few days. Others were tied to a rope or chain and left to fend for themself. Some people even left them in the attic so they would be safe from the water. Then there were others who did not care and just left them with no care at all. As Katrina came ashore these animals went through a living hell. The homes they were in gave way to the winds and tide surge. Some were swept through glass windows being torn apart as they were pushed through. Those that were tied either drown or choke to death as they tried to free themself. Some swam until they could swim no more then slipped below the water. Some were burned by the chemials in the water. Those that did find a roof or tree to stand in or on had to wait days or weeks for help. Many starved to death waiting. It was hard on humans to understand what Katrina did, but for animals who were sick or hungry they were at a loss.
But in the end they all found peace in one form or another. Some were found by caring humans who took them to a shelter and helped them find homes. Others were welcomed home as they crossed the Bridge. But they all at one point or another asked the question. 'What did I do wrong? I could never do anything so bad as to deserve this'.
Katrina took all we had, our home, our town, our way of life. But we took our furbabies with us when we left. We made a promise to them when we got them to always keep them safe. If you cant keep that promise maybe you should rethink a pet.
