My Babies
by Susie Smith
Sophie came along when I was just 9 years old, mum and I bought her home from the RSPCA and she sat on my lap in the back of the car, she promptly threw up in my lap! We had some problems with her initially she was very aggressive to men in particular but was so loving with the family. We got through it and as she got older she chilled out more! The years went by and we noticed she was slowing down, she had problems with her legs and couldn't go for walks anymore, then she started losing weight, after a few visits to the vets he eventually told us it was time to let her go. Mum and I decided to stay with her and the vet came to the house. I know she understood and we sat and hugged her as she left us. She was our first and has been at Rainbow Bridge for ten years now, I know she's there waiting. Toffee was a sweetheart, an absolute beauty and the few years she was with us were so precious. She was a pedigree Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the softest most sweet natured baby you could imagine. We had no idea she was sick, she was only six years old. I came home from work and mum told me she was gone, the vet said it was a brain tumour, that was thirteen years ago and I still think of her all the time, my precious Toffee. Gizmo was a character, a Jack Russell cross and a little fiend! A scruffy little furball, so full of life, she was mum's baby really, they were inseperable. We had her for thirteen years and I had left home when she left us, that didn't make it any easier to deal with though. I know she's at Rainbow Bridge waiting for us all but especially mum! Finally Trixie, she was mine, she came with me when I left home and the tears are flowing now as I remember her. A 'funny dog' is how people would describe her! She would sit on her own sometimes for hours and other times would follow me round and never leave my side. She had a high pitched bark that would drive me mad! But she was so loving and always there when I needed a hug or cheering up. I'll never forgot the night she left, Valentines Day 2001. My boyfriend came home from work and found her, as I walked in the door i knew from his face, he had put her upstairs on the bed, I ran up and convinced myself I could feel a heartbeat although I knew deep down she had gone. We rushed her to the vet who confirmed what we already knew. Losing Trixie was the hardest and I miss her every minute of everyday. I still have Dillon, Trixie's brother but he's getting older now and I dread the day coming although it will be wonderful for them to be reunited. So the gang are all together and waiting for us, it warms my heart to think of them all healthy and happy as they deserve to be. I sent my love to each and every one of you. Look after each other.
