Perch In The Tree

PERCH IN THE TREE

Thousands cry and cannot be heard.
They’re lost, hungry, and homeless and eyes are blurred.
Not knowing where to go when they turn around,
Only remnants are left of the old hometown.
Strangers appear in a blurry-eyed mist
But quickly pass by, this loved one was missed.
Silently watching as people are saved,
A neighbor expends a watery grave.
Maybe if I stay perched in this tree
The next one rescued might just be me.
My family was saved, I was grateful to see.
But I can’t understand why they couldn’t take me.
My calls are not loud as to frighten away
A searcher who is close and coming my way.
Shivering scared, my tummy is empty,
A sip of dirty water seems so tempting.
How many days have I clung to this tree?
I dream of my loved one snuggling with me.
A lap so warm, a hug and a kiss,
Those loving arms are the ones that I miss.
My time has come and I am alone,
I only wish my family were home.
Someone is coming, I must let them know.
No one else is left and I really want to go.
Please take me with you I promise to be good.
With outreached hand, I go when I should.
I’m scared but have hope of finding my family.
Next time I pray they won’t have to leave me.
This journey goes full circle, my family is found.
My hope is for the same joy of my friends all around.
I am thankful to those whose efforts brought me
Back to my family from my perch in the tree.
