Ode to Bennie
by Nancy Zornes.........................................

Bennie Zornes May 23, 1994 ~ Sept 21, 2005

He was just our doggie, our Baby….
He was our other eyes that could see above the clouds: our other ears that could hear above the winds.
He told us more than a thousand times that we were his reason for being—by the way he would rest against our legs, by the way he would thump his tail at our smallest smile, by the way that he would show his hurt when we had to leave the house without taking him, and how he would sit in the window and wait so patiently for us to return home… (He must have been worried when he was not along to care for us)

When we were wrong, he was delighted to forgive.
When we were angry he would clown to make us smile.
When we were happy, he showed his joy unbounded.
When we were a fool, he would ignore it.
When we succeeded in life, he would brag by his wagging tail.

He taught us the meaning of devotion is loyalty itself.
With him, we always knew secret comfort and felt a private peace.
He brought us understanding where before we were ignorant.
His little head on our knees always healed our human hurts.
His presence by our side was protection against all our fears of unknown things.

He filled our life with joy and happiness, and then as we let him go-our life was filled with sadness. Now that he has crossed the Rainbow Bridge, we know he is there, , gazing out the portholes, and waiting to see us running toward him in the distance.
