Dear Driver,
On March 11th, on Rt. 187 in West Suffield, CT., I probably scared you for a short time. You see, I was chasing a stray cat off my property (and I knew my property line only went to the edge of the grass), but the cat ran up my driveway. Because I was on the driveway and it was dark, I guess I didn’t realize I had gone past my property line and into the street. (I knew the street was dangerous because my parents taught me that). It was dark and you probably didn’t see me when I ran in front of you. I’m sure it scared you when you hit me because I was a 70lb. Black Labrador. I can’t begin to tell you how scared and worried I was and how much pain I was in. I knew I was in trouble, but then I got real scared because you drove away and left me lying in the road............................there was no one there to help me.
I laid in the road watching other car headlights coming at me, but I was in too much pain to move. I started worrying about dying, but kept hanging on as I knew I would need to continue going to the park with my Dad to catch his Frisbee, make sure he was safe while we were swimming, and protecting my parents at the beach in Maine and Block Island. You see, I always went everywhere with them and was beginning to worry about who would take care of them. I was getting very cold and starting to shiver when all of a sudden a car stooped and a woman ran up to me.
Her name is Deb, from Feeding Hills, MA. She ran and got my Mom and then ran and got our neighbor John to help. Deb and my Mom kept talking to me and covered me with warm blankets while John ran to get his truck to take me to a vet. I kept trying to hang on, but I was in shock and just couldn’t hang on any longer. I took my last breath while my Mom was holding me............................
if only you had stopped.
