Shalena
by Sherry Moss
Shalena and Scooter were brother and sister. They romped and played and were the closest of friends. They were inseparatable. One cold Christmas Eve in 1997, Steve let them both out to use the bathroom. They were running around and having fun but ventured off into the path of an oncoming car. Shalena was hit and injured but still alive. Scooter ran into the house in fear and hid in his little cage. Meanwhile, we took Shelana to the vet and he kept her there under observation but didn't realize how much internal damage there was. I was allowed to bring her home after several days. The doctor said she was on the mend. I had to leave to go to work early one morning and she sat up in her cage and looked at me. I asked my mother to look in on her thoughout the day and when mom came to check on her, Shalena was dead. She called me at work and I left work early and cryed and cryed. I wrapped her in a sheet and Steve buried her in my flower garden. I miss her terribly. Scooter sleeps with us in our bed since the accident. Sadly missed and never to be forgotten, Shalena, we love you.
