She'd always been so good to me,
And never let me down.
She'd listened to me laugh and sing,
And at times, she'd watched me frown.
We'd been best friends since I was two,
And love was hidden there.
People saw just child and dog,
But we knew the other cared.
I took care of her the best I could
Just as she did for me.
Nothing, no nothing, could tear us apart,
Or make that love go free.
Then one day in September of '96,
The unexpected came.
She'd risked her life to protect us,
There was no one to blame.
No one could have stopped it,
No one knew that it'd take place.
But I saw the look of pain and hurt,
That was written on everyone's face.
The tears came without ceasing;
It seemed they would be endless.
But then I thought of all the times
That I had felt friendless...
She'd always been there to listen,
She'd always been there to stay,
All because she had seen me
In a totally different way.
My tears began to dry up,
And my spirits began to rise,
As I thought of the life that we had shared
And the love that would never die.
