Pieces of You
by Jo Barnes.........................................
PIECES OF YOU
In memory of my Best Friend, Jake
May, 1992 – November 10, 2005

It's funny what becomes important
To some, it's money or a piece of jewelry
To others, maybe a picture
But to me, today, it's a clump of your hair on the floor that used to be so bothersome
I'm glad the sweeper missed it
Because it's a piece of you.

I remember when we found each other
It was a long time ago, but it seems like yesterday
I don't know when the unbreakable bond formed, but it was so strong
This love I had never experienced before
We faced and survived many struggles together
You and me against the world
And the bond grew….

It's funny what becomes important
To me, today, it's a dirty tennis ball that rolled under the bed
Your favorite toy
How I wish you were here to play with it
Another piece of you.

I can't remember when your hair turned gray or your legs became weak
But it only made me love you more
I guess I thought we would be together forever, but our time was running short
The desperation to turn back time
My Buddy, my Jake – how do I say goodbye to you?

You have unselfishly protected me and loved me when the rest of the world was so cruel
You never asked for anything in return
Just to be in my presence, or just to have a pat on the head
Was enough for you.

Now, my Buddy, you don't hurt anymore
You are at peace
Your job here on this earth is done
You can play ball again and chase the squirrels like you used to do when you were young.

Please don't worry when you see me cry
You taught me so much and I am forever grateful
The gift of unconditional love
How to appreciate a beautiful day
Communication without talking
True loyalty
The best piece of you.

It's funny what becomes important
To some, it's a new car or a new outfit
But to me, today, it's a smudge on the window where your nose once was
Probably barking at a passerby – still protecting me with all you have left
Before your final ride in the car
I'm glad I haven't washed the glass yet
The last piece of you.
