Festus was a friend's horse that was put to sleep September 5, 2001. His health was failing even though his heart was still strong. I wasn't there when he was put to sleep, but I wish I had been. It would have put things right in my mind. I have loved so many animals in my life and I'm only 17 almost 18. So many I have lost and wish each day for one more glimpse into their eyes. The eyes are the windows to the soul and when I look into an animals eyes I feel peace. All my troubles and pain just seem to fade away. When a family member dies it doesn't pain me as much as the death of one of my pets. Why? Probably because animals love unconditionally and they pass no criticisms. They are always there for you and you can talk to them about anything. Sometimes they know us better than we know ourselves. Life is funny sometimes. Dr. Louis J. Camuti said, "By loving and understanding animals, perhaps we humans shall come to understand each other". I wait for the day when I can see my friends again and only then will my heart know true happiness.
