GOODBYE ABBY
by ROBERT Ford
Little did I know what a great friend I was going to meet, when I stopped you and your buddy from running near the busy street. You were a young black Lab, he was a different type of pup. When you came for the dog biscuit, I quickly snatched you up. I looked down the street to see if someone was coming after you. When I didn't see anyone, there was only one thing left to do. I put you in the front of my milk truck so I could use the phone Mom and Ahma said to bring you with me so you would not be alone. I have to admit it but I felt like such a schmuck. By the time I got off the phone, you ate every milk-bone on the truck. We put an ad in the paper and when no one staked a claim, the family got together and made Abigail your name. Everyone who knew you, remembers your happy, wagging tail. Whenever you met someone, it would start going without fail. I won't say you wagged it fast but if you just had bare knees, when it started going you could actually feel a breeze. When Melissa brought her dog Cassie to live with us, she caused you lots of strife. But looking back in reality she probably added years on to your life. When you got older, you may have heard us sometimes snicker at your face. But with your velvet black coat, your white beard and eyebrows looked so out of place. We didn't want to let you go but we felt it was a must. As long as you were living here you gave to us your trust. We felt a little comfort as we walked out the vet's front door. Knowing deep down in our hearts you weren't hurting anymore. Brandy misses you a lot, sometimes sleeping in your bed. I know that you are listening, by the way you tilt your head. Thanks you for giving us all the memories and love, these are both the things we could never get enough of. I'm sure by now you're at Rainbow's Bridge with Maggie and Mandy. I see you three playing together again, happy as can be. I want you ladies to be good and look for us every now and then. I don't know how long it's going be but I promise, we will meet again
