My Jeffie
by D Eliason
Jeffie was a 14 year old Black Lab who had a heart of gold and a love of life. I had Jeffie since she was a puppy and although she had slowed down in recent years, her death was sudden and unexpected. On Friday we found out that she had cancer and on Saturday she died at home surrounded by her family. Up until she died she had an appetite and even had some chicken soup an hour before she died. As with most labs, her favorite thing in life was food. Jeffie recently tore the ACL ligament in her knee and couldn't walk very far. We were advised to have a very invasive operation with a long recovery time, but decided not to have the operation given her age. I was concerned that even if she survived the operation, she might spend the rest of her life in pain and recovering from the operation. In light of her recent passing, I know the decision was the right one. Because Jeffie and her sister Whisper liked to take walks, we would put Jeffie in a red flyer wagon and "walk" her around the subdivision. She looked like a queen and enjoyed the walks very much. I know Jeffie had a good, long life, but her passing has left a big hole in the household. I wish we had a little more time with her. I know that some day we will meet again at the rainbow bridge. The stories and poems on the rainbow bridge website help a lot. Thank you.
