"Coming Home to Die"
by Carmen Echeverria
I remember when my husband and I first moved into our house. There were lots of stray cats living in the neighborhood. I of course couldn't help but feed them all. My heart couldn't say no. One day when I was feeding some of the cats. One cat came up with her litter of kittens. There were three. She encouraged them to eat. Obviously she was trying to ween them off of her milk. It was so funny they didn't know what to do with the food at first. They would take it out of the bowl and play with it. Well over the next few weeks she would bring them by and get them fed. Of course they finally broke away from mama and hung out like all the other cats. Of course they thought my house was their home. I didn't mind. There were two girls and one boy. I named one of the girls "Friend" which we still have. We named the other girl "Suessie" and we named the boy "Princy". Over the years "Friend" remained but "Suessie" and "Princy" became the neighborhood cats. They would go everywhere to eat. They wanted to be free. "Suessie" became a mama and a good friend which we still see from time to time. "Princy" stayed around us on his own terms. But "Friend" became full fledged family. She wouldn't have it any other way. We tried with "Suessie" and "Princy" but we just couldn't get them to stay. "Suessie" is a sweetie and of course she's carried on the tradition of bringing her babies over to get them fed. "Princy" was the neighborhood character. Walking into peoples houses if their doors were open. For instance when you'd leave your door open to bring groceries in he'd just come in and look through the bags for anything good. I remember one christmas he came in and we didn't know it. We had a whole house full of people. We all got in front of the christmas tree to take a family photo. Little did we know "Princy" was sitting down in the group and got his picture taken with us. Little later on we realized that he was in the house and we just let him hang out and enjoy in the festivities. He just ran around and mingled with everyone. It wasn't until we got the film back that we realized then that he had participated in the christmas family photo. Sadly tonight he went to Rainbow's Bridge. My husband and I saw him in our back yard. He coudln't get up. He was trying. It looked as if he had a neurological problem. We took him to the vet and we found out bad news. He had some kind of trauma to his hind quarters and maggots were in his wounds. This injury apparently happened a few days ago. We were right he had neurological damage. The only thing that could be done was to send him to Rainbow's Bridge. It wasn't fair to put him through anymore suffering. I tried to protest but the Dr. assured me there was nothing to be done. If he would've been found earlier when it first happened maybe just maybe something could've been done. But our neighborhood character was in need of going to Rainbow's Bridge. I love him. Even though I didn't technically own him I felt he was my own. "Princy" was family. He knew it also. Look at him at christmas time. He knew he needed to be with family during the holidays. The Dr. said when animals get hurt and they're going to die they go home to die. That's what "Princy" did he came home to die. I'll love you forever "Princy". You'll never be forgotten. Carmen.
