Lucky
by Andy Bradford
Lucky was a black and white feral who was found one day by the side of the highway. His rear right leg was all mangled up and he was not neutered. He was taken to a hospital where doctors amputated his leg and neutered him. Lucky was then given to an animal rescue organization and taken to our local Petco, where we fell in love with him. We already had a cat, a twelve-year-old named Buddy. Lucky and Buddy met, and they hit it off right away. Lucky became best friends with Buddy and the two spent nearly a year together, hunting, playing, or just sitting in the sun. It was a long time before Lucky grew to trust us, and it seemed like the love would last many years. It was not to be. We don't know how it happened- maybe someone left out antifreeze for rats and other vermin, or maybe a car had an antifreeze leak. All we know is that Lucky came in and was not well. We took him to the veterinarian and hoped for the best. He died around noon that day. That was almost a year ago, and Buddy was depressed for a month. By the end, Buddy and Lucky were inseperable.
