Kali, aka "Pup Pup" was a special dog that came from the streets of India. Indian Pariah dogs are an ancient dog. (From Wikipedia): The Indian dog, Indie dog, South Asian dog, or Desi Kutta, is a landrace of dog native to the Indian subcontinent. They have erect ears, a wedge-shaped head, and a curved tail. It is easily trainable and often used as a guard dog and police dog. This dog is an example of an ancient group of dog known as pye-dogs. There is archaeological evidence that the dog was present in Indian villages as early as 4,500 years ago. Indian Pariah dogs have a close resemblance to primitive breeds from other continents...namely the Australian Dingo, the Canaan Dog of Israel, the New Guinea Singing Dog, and the Central African village dog, ancestor of the African Basenji. Kind of a long story, but we were looking for our first dog as a married couple, and a woman at Joe's work had two dogs there that came over from India; a momma dog named Tulsi and her 6 month old baby puppy named Kali that were up for adoption. We decided to meet the puppy, Kali, and we fell in love. I wondered though...these dogs came from India? So called animal control, and they said, oh no, these dogs came over illegally! They told us we had to quarantine baby Kali to our home for 9 months, and unfortunately, she and her momma Tulsi became separated in the process. When the nine months were up, we had to bring Kali to Western MA to become our legal dog, and she was ours. The reason her name became Pup Pup was because we kept calling her Kali, and she wouldn't look at us, but when we talked about the puppy or pup, she would turn right around and respond, so we called her Pup Pup. Pup Pup had become our best friend and our whole life. Every day we'd go on walking adventures, either with her familiar neighborhood route, at the bog, down the street at our pond, or many other woods and beach adventures. Her favorite place to vacation was at her "grandparents" home (Joe's parents) in NH, where they have acres of woods on their property. Pup Pup would love to be off leash and roam the woods. Her favorite dog was Joe's parent's dog named Max. One time Max visited Pup Pup on the Cape, and Max would scratch his paws after he did his duty, and Pup Pup was watching, and ever since she saw him do that, she continued on and would always scratch the earth after she did her duty. Pup Pup loved carrot cake, Joe's favorite birthday cake I would make him (and her) every year. One year, I made Joe's carrot cake and left it on the stove to cool while Joe and I went out to eat for his birthday. When we got back, Puppy dog had gotten up on the stove (we didn't even know she could do that!) and took down Joe's cake and ate 2/3 of it! I apologized to Joe that he didn't have a cake now, and he said, "Oh yes I do, you turn that cake upside down and frost it, that's my cake!" Ha ha, so I did! One of Pup Pup's favorite places to be was in our back yard. She dug a hole back there by the deck so big, you could probably fit 3 Pup Pup's in there. She also liked to roll around in the grass on a sunny day, be in the flower garden, and especially in the vegetable garden, where she would dig around to help her Momma with the gardening. She loved chasing squirrels and "bun buns." Pup Pup was a service dog for a couple of years while her human Momma experienced seizures. Pup Pup would go on the bus with her seat belt and help her Momma come out of the seizures by licking her face and scratching her arm. Pup Pup was a very vocal dog, with her New Guinea Singing Dog heritage. She would express herself with different vocal tunes that were always entertaining and surprising. She had many different expressions of herself, as she would use her mouth, eyes, ears, tail, and paws to "communicate." She was almost human in the ways she could respond to how we were feeling and was always there for us. She was completely loyal and would even follow her Momma into every room where she went; she could never leave her side. Pup Pup will always be in our hearts, as she was our whole life. We must now learn to adjust our lives without her. We will always love and miss you, our Baby Pup Pup. |
