The first day we saw him, as a little puppy, we looked at each other and instantly realized that we were meant to journey forward together. We recognized and knew each other, maybe from another life and time. He had a journey ahead of him and so did we and somehow, we were sure, it was meant to be embarked upon together. While he was with us, he showed us that we needed to laugh even when we were worried, tired or annoyed. He taught us to love unconditionally. He taught us forgiveness, patience and how to find joy in the simplest of things. We saw in his puppy eyes that he needed us too, but, in restrospect, it is very hard to think that we offered him anything, when compared to what he gave us. We can only guess as to what he needed and received from us, but we would like to think that the care and love we provided was enough. We hope he is waiting at the rainbow bridge for us, but we will truly understand if he isn't there because his mission just may be to offer his wisdom, love and help to others that are so desperately in need of it. |
We are reminded of a poem by Auden that attempts to put into words our sense of loss for this wonderful soul that we shared our life with for all too brief an interval.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
Goodbye dear friend. You were loved.
