You filled our hearts with happiness
But now our hearts are torn

You came into our lives one day
When you were just a pup
You hung from Daddy's pocket
Hoping he would pick you up

We knew then that you were special
And we were meant to be together
You touched our hearts in such a way
You changed our lives forever

Eating your first meal
Excited, shook from head to paw
You balanced on your front paws
As the back ones left the floor

I didn't get much sleep that night
You wanted to be near
You slept astride my forearm
But I didn't mind my dear

You filled our lives with laughter
And brought us so much joy
To watch you growing day by day
Our gorgeous Sammy boy

What a handsome boy you grew to be
A beauty pure and whole
Your fur so soft and silky
And eyes to melt the soul

You were there when we got married
And when your little sis arrived
You became her true protector
And never left her side

You stole the hearts of everyone
All loved to give you fuss
But for everything we gave you
You gave more back to us.

The years rolled on so quickly
Far too quickly for me
White highlights in your beard
Where once black fur used to be

You refused to let age stop you
Especially in your favourite place
Scotland made you feel a pup again
And rabbits you would chase

You loved to stroll along the beach
And even loved the sea
We have such lovely memories there
You, daddy, sis and me

But you know the saddest saying
All good things must come to an end
It really did for us tonight
We lost our faithful friend

Our house is now too quiet
The sound that's gone is yours
The rattle of your water bowl
The patter of your paws

The tapping at the window
When you wished to come inside
Today we had to say goodbye
And part of us has died

We know you're running free now
And you're a young boy once again
Restored to health and vigour
Not feeling any pain

I know the pain we feel right now
Will not go on forever
One day you'll greet us at the Bridge
Then we'll always be together
