Memories of Velvet
|
The tale of Mr. Velvet... I remember the day we got Velvet. We were on our way into K-Mart and some teenagers had a box of kittens they were trying to find homes for. Being long-time cat lovers we had to stop and hold each and every one of them. We proceeded to do our shopping and on the way out we stopped and petted them again. Velvet was the only black cat in the litter and we fell in love with him. At first I tried to talk my husband out of getting him as we already had 3 other cats at home but he said "we HAVE to take him" and that is what we did. We took him home and he fit right into the family with our other cats. He was a very quiet and private cat, but had a silly sense of humor as well....which must be associated with his April 1st birthday! At night he would sleep in my armpit or on my neck and he loved to kneed my long hair. I would wake up in the morning with a total rat's nest in my hair from all his kneeding. One of the funniest things he did was when I had left a soft doll on the bed that had long hair. We came home and he had kneeded the dolls hair until it was a rat's nest too...I guess he was missing his mommy! He was also very skilled we would learn in acrobatics. We had two book shelves in the corner of our living room and he would jump from one book shelf to the other as he went higher and higher on the shelves. He would eventually get to the top shelf and hang out for a bit. He loved doing that. Then he took his acrobatics further by walking the "tight rope" across the top of the blinds on our large picture window. I guess you could say he wasn't afraid of heights...ha ha! When he turned one year old we had a very special birthday party for him complete with a home-made cake, presents, and the works. He LOVED it! He just sat there an looked as I opened his gifts and gave them to him. He had fun! He loved all kinds of things like treats, toys, catnip, chipmunks, squirrels, and tuna fish. He had a very sweet and kind spirit. He lived for 11 1/2 years and most of it was a good life. Only the last few months of his life were less than ideal as he succumbed to cancer and we had to let him go. I hope that one day we will connect again and I know that his spirit will always be in my heart. We love and miss you SO much Velvet! |
