Memories of Pickle

One Year Today

Dear Pickle,

There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of you. You were my first furry family member as an adult and my longest. After almost 15 years together, it is still hard to remember you are not with us anymore. I always tell Wyatt to let the "boys and girls" out even though there is only one boy now. And, I know Poki still misses you, too. We all do.

Love in our hearts always,
Mom

Remembering Pickle
July 8, 1994 - January 22, 2009

You were just 1 year old when I met you and "Dad". And, when I came to be a part of the Family, you were happy to have a "Mom" and you quickly became "Mama's Boy".

You followed me everywhere, sitting on my desk while I worked and sleeping curled in a little ball next to me at night. Eventually, things that you would not allow anyone else to do, you still let me -- (like any Dachshund, you did not like to have your feet and toes trimmed!)

We welcomed Girl the following year and you were happy to share us which was a blessing because then Poki and Annie soon joined us, too. I think you were happy to have Poki as your playmate! Even though you were little, along with Girl, you were the voice of our house!

Your favorite toy was any kind of ball, but especially the ones bigger than you! You would chase those things endlessly until I finally had to take them away so you would rest.

When Wyatt came along, you were already 8 years old -- middle age for you! You were interested in Wyatt but kept your distance -- until that is, you figured out that he could be an additional food source when he dropped Cheerios from his high chair! Until you left us, when it was mealtime, you could always be found waiting under Wyatt's chair. As Wyatt grew older, you were happy to discover that he was only too glad to throw the ball for you so every time he went outside, you would follow on the off chance that he would get your ball out! We had to limit this as you got older and were diagnosed with an enlarged heart -- a common condition for your breed. We managed it quite well for over 5 years.

You just had your check-up with Dr. Darin and we all remarked how well you were "hanging in there" when not 2 days later, you became ill. I rushed you to the vet 2 times that day and you spent 5 more days in the hospital and I visited you every day, but it was to be an illness that your condition would not let you recover.

We faced a most difficult decision to decide it was time to stop trying. I held you and asked you what I always did, "Pickle -- do you love Mama?" and even though it was apparent you were not yourself, you rolled on your back one last time for belly rubs. You even ate one last biscuit for me although you had not eaten in days.

It was with very heavy hearts that "Dad" and I said we had to let you go. With "Dad" present, I looked in your eyes while you gained release from your suffering very peacefully. We were blessed to have you with us for almost 15 years.

I know Annie will be waiting for you over that Rainbow Bridge and you will play ball together to your now "good-as -new" heart's content.

You were our first and oldest when you left us. You were deeply loved and will be forever missed.
