Colt's Rainbow Residency

Memories of Colt

Colt came into our lives in late March of 2003. He was an Easter present to my son Ryan. As with every dog I ever brought into my life, we adopted him from the Anti- Cruelty Society. Colt, a black Lab mix, (although he looked purebred) was a Valentines baby and we almost named him Valentino. In retrospect it would have been the perfect name for him because never was there a more gentle and loving creature. At six weeks Colt was tiny & fuzzy and I was assured that he would get no bigger than 50-60 pounds. I guarantee you those folks were laughing their heads off after we walked out the shelter doors because Colt, at his top weight, was 131 lbs and standing next to me his head reached my hip.

As an un-housebroken puppy we would "try" to confine him to the kitchen. This however, did not work because within days he learned to climb over not only one, but two security gates stacked on top of each other. Out of fear that he would hurt himself we decided to keep the gates down. At night Colt would sleep under Ryan's bed, but his favorite place in the whole world to sleep was curled up on Steve's chest in the recliner. This would continue to be true throughout his life. If Steve was in that recliner, then Colt would be too. Whether or not Steve wanted him there was irrelevant.

When Colt was six months old we moved from the city to a house on an acre of land in the southwest suburbs. There was a huge backyard and it did not take Colt long to declare it "his kingdom". His to dig holes in, his to run through....his to rule. He did not like people in his yard and would attempt to herd out anyone who dared step one foot onto the grassy part of the yard.

Shortly after Colt's 1st birthday we decided that he needed a "buddy" to hang out with during the day when everyone was gone. So back to the shelter we went and adopted a 6 month old yellow lab that we named Bullet. Colt would become the typical "big brother" to Bullet. Playing with him, fighting with him, trying to bury him a hole he was digging in the middle of the yard and protecting him from the evil dogs that live next door.

I could never really be sure which season Colt loved the best. Summers were full of playing in his wading pool, laying on the deck in the sun and running and rolling in "his" yard. He even liked rainy days. Rain, you see, made it easier to dig. Many a day Bullet would come back into the house with muddy paw prints on his head and back. Colt would come in right behind him, and I could almost hear him thinking ..."I just need to dig that hole a little deeper". But then winter would come and his eyes would light up at the first snowfall that was heavy enough to cover the ground. Colt loved to run and play in the snow. Anytime there was snow on the ground you could count on Colt coming in so covered in snow that he looked like he walked miles through a blizzard. And I swear he would be smiling!!

I was so very lucky to have Colt, whom I would often call my Sweet Prince, in my life. So in closing, I say "Goodnight Sweet Prince, till we meet again. I will miss you every day for the rest of my life.
