Alex's Rainbow Residency

Memories of Alex

It was March of 2003 when we took Brandy with us to find a companion for her after the unexpected loss of her litter mate brother who expired on his third birthday after surgery. Brandy was grieving deeply, as we all were, after the loss of Max. He was the runt of the litter and she took care of him, always. We had taken Brandy with us before when looking at pets, but she never took to any dog until we met Alex. She immediately knew he was the one, and she could not have picked a better companion, friend, son and care taker. Although Alex was a pup when we adopted him, he quickly learned from Brandy. She would nurture him and bathe him as if he were her pup. He loved to play catch and was frequently seen with a squeaky toy in his mouth as if asking us to play with him. He would also irritate Brandy with the toys by squeaking them next to her ear when she would be lying down. Alex never grabbed food when treats or bones were hand fed to him. He was always gentle when taking these things. Maybe it was because his tongue looked too big for his mouth. In fact, when he would sleep, the tip of his tongue was always visible. Alex, a Lab mix, was a husky dog and would bark when strangers arrived around the house. His bark was much worse than his bite and people found out when they spent some time with him. Although it started differently, Alex because Brandy's care taker as she is getting older and more blind. All we would have to do was say, "Get Brandy" when they were outside in the yard and he would find her and guide her back to the house. He will be known for his kind and very gentle ways. We will greatly miss Alex, perhaps Brandy grieving the most.
